Dr. Crowley currently supervises seven direct reports, three of whom are director-level reports with significant Academic Affairs support unit leadership responsibilities, at Fort Hays State University. Here is the current Division of Academic Affairs organizational chart. Personnel management duties in this capacity include managing full-time administrators, part-time directors with reassignment from teaching duties, and unclassified staff.
As Dean of the Graduate School, he supervised five direct reports including one assistant dean with reassignment from teaching duties, an unclassified professional staff member, and three classified staff members. Annual duties included goal setting, weekly or bi-weekly management of progress toward unit objectives, and annual merit evaluations.
Prior experience supervising faculty members includes serving as department chair in two departments – the music unit at Cameron University in Lawton, OK (10 FTE) and Fort Hays State University (16.1 FTE). Experiences at this level included initial appointments, organizing searches for vacancies, tenure, promotion, annual merit evaluations, sabbatical, and annual leave requests.
Philosophically, Dr. Crowley prefers to build teams according to a simple four-quadrant management grid whereby one axis is the measurement of competence and the other axis is the level of culture support for the organization (courtesy Harvey Kesselman, Stockton University):

Dr. Crowley prefers to meet either weekly or bi-weekly, depending on the individual’s level of job autonomy and experience as an administrator, in order to maintain optimal job performance from each direct report. Some employees require more support than others to complete their job performance while others simply need to be guided as they improve. I prefer to meet frequently to guide and coach improvement instead of in a formalized summative session held at the conclusion of the evaluation period.
