I have been involved in leading university-wide assessment of student learning efforts at two institutions. Both have approached assessment using the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle and used software systems to manage the high volume of data points reported by faculty across the institution. I have been fortunate to have worked alongside talented assessment subject matter experts who have made great strides in university-level program assessment of student learning. I have also combined this work with my interest in academic analytics to integrate planning efforts for the institution and put these results in the hands of department chairs and program coordinators to inform decisions to “close the loop” to improve academic programs based on student learning outcomes.
These efforts have positioned these institutions for success in HLC Criterion 4B.
